Knowing how to create an animated text effect in Adobe Photoshop can be useful in making banners, logos, avatars, forum signatures, etc. Here is a simple tutorial for beginners in which i will explain how to create an animated text effect in Photoshop. Final output of this tutorial:

Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new 4×4 px file and zoom it in 1600 times.

We will use it for creating banner background. Take Pencil tool Pencil tool, set it to 1 px and use three grey colors to make the same image:

Go to Edit-Define Pattern.

Create a new file. I suggest to use a classic banner size 468×60 pixels. In the upper menu go to Edit-Fill, and choose the pattern you have just created:

Press OK. Adobe Photoshop creates a new background for our banner from 4×4 px image:

Let’s add some text using Type tool Type tool Just write something.

I used Concepto font. You can use any font you like.

Take Move tool Move tool, press Ctrl+A on your keyboard to select all:

Now click on the following icons to align your text horizontally and vertically:

It’s time to add some bevel and emboss effect. In the upper menu go to Layer-Layer Style-Bevel and Emboss. You can use my settings:

Now create a new layer in the layer window. If you don’t see this window, press F7.

Take Brush tool Brush tool Hold Shift and draw a straight vertical yellow line for our animated text effect. Try to position it to the left side of your text:

Add some outer glow to your line. Layer-Layer Style-Outer Glow:

After these manipulations our line looks like a glowing light:

Now i recommend you to save your image in PSD format. Just in case. If you use old versions of Adobe Photoshop (CS, CS2 or even older), click on the ImageReady icon:

If you use new versions of Photoshop (CS3, CS4, CS5), go to Window-Animation.

In animation window click on the indicated icon to create a duplicate frame:

Make sure that your yellow line layer is active in layer window:

Now move yellow line to the right of your text:

In the upper menu go to Layer-Create Clipping Mask. It will make an animated text effect when your shining line will appear on the text only.

In the animation window click on the Tween icon:

Put 20 frames:

Program will automatically create smooth effect between first and second frames. The more frames you have, the smoother will be the effect and bigger the file size. Click Play and choose a Forever mode:

Now save your animated text. File - Save for Web & Devices (or File - Save Optimized As in Photoshop CS2 or older versions). Choose GIF format.
